Piedmont’s long history of  work, conquest, art and culture is a natural well nourishing the region’s present-day vitality and creativity. Throughout its history, the  region’s population has been capable of  harnessing the area’s natural riches and beauties to launch and consolidate internationally competitive companies and successful initiatives. Piemonte’s area is divided almost equally among three distinct landscapes: mountains, plains and hills. A separate mention needs to be made of the region’s artistic and cultural heritage spread among its cities, towns and villages and giving witness to each period of its long history: palaces, Royal residences, churches and castles, theatres and modern art galleries, all await to be discovered by the culturally interested traveller. 41% of the region’s territory is covered by the Alps with their snow-covered summits which include Europe’s highest ranges like the Monte Rosa and the Monviso. It’s a winter sport and nature lover’s paradise, chosen for good  reason to host the 2006 Olympic Games.

32% of Piemonte’s area is covered by the hills of the Langhe, the Roero and the Monferrato, where some of the world’s most famous wines are made, among them the Barolo and the Asti Spumante.
The Piemonte has 46 “dénomination d’origine” and  9 “dénomination d’origine controlée” wines. Piemonte’s culinary traditions count among Italy’s finest, with Alba’s white truffles and the region’s infinite variety of cheeses among its delicacies.

Some of Italy’s most picturesque lakes are in Piemonte: the Maggiore and Lake Orta in North Eastern Piemont, the Avigliana lakes in the Turin area. The romantic atmospheres, the breath-taking views, luxury lakefront hotels and teeming botanical gardens have inspired writers such as Stendhal, Flaubert and Dickens and have established the Northern Lakes as a must-go destination for international travelers since 200 years.
